Lack of sleep meaning for more than 24 hours can affect people very negatively. It can really effect three things, attention, working memory and executive function. Your attention to class, important emails, information you need to know for a test can be skewed because of lack of sleep. Studying last minute and trying to remember what you read at 3 in the morning is going to be difficult because of the lack of sleep you get. It would be better for you to go to sleep and get a good nights rest instead of staying up studying. This article really. stresses how important it is to get the sleep you need. (Garcia 1) 

Insomnia:  A common sleep disorder that can cause people to have a hard time going to sleep, staying asleep, and not waking up to early.

This article was wonderful to read and talked about how insomnia can effect mental illness. About 7-20% of western adults have insomnia and also have a mental illness. Those who no sign of depression and then suffer insomnia will be more likely to develop it. This can also happen when people develop anxiety.

Robbert Havekes dives in and talks about how detrimental lack of sleep really is, how you can develop diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and many more things. He mainly talks about how it affects our brain, and the hippocampus that works our memory. Sleep deprivation even just 5 hours can effect our memory for everything.
